What is Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology, known in Sanskrit as Jyotish ("the science of light"), is the astrological system born in India over 5,000 years ago. It is considered one of the six Vedangas (auxiliary limbs of the Vedas) and remains, today, the most precise predictive system in the world.

Unlike Western astrology — which uses the tropical zodiac based on seasons — Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac: the actual positions of the planets against the fixed stars in the background of the sky. This means that your sun sign is usually different in both systems.

But the deepest difference is not astronomical — it is philosophical. Vedic astrology speaks of karma, dharma, past lives, and the evolution of the soul through time. It doesn't ask "who you are" — it asks "what you came to learn in this life."

The Planetary Dasas — Your Karmic Calendar

The dasas are the great planetary cycles that govern each stage of your life. Each planet rules a specific period, and precisely marks what kind of karma you are meant to experience in each decade:

The secret: the order and duration of the dasas depend on your Moon nakshatra at birth. That's why two people born on the same day can have radically different lives.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vedic Astrology

What is Vedic astrology?
Vedic astrology (or Jyotish) is the astrological system originating from India, over 5,000 years old. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the sidereal zodiac (based on real stars) and focuses on past life karma, nakshatras (lunar mansions), and dasas (planetary cycles).
What is the difference between Vedic and Western?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on seasons), while Vedic uses the sidereal (based on fixed stars). This means your sun sign is usually DIFFERENT in each system. Vedic also places much more emphasis on the Moon than the Sun, and works with karma, dharma, and past lives.
What are nakshatras?
They are the 27 lunar mansions of the Vedic zodiac. Each measures 13 degrees 20 minutes and has a deity, symbol, mythological story, and deep meaning. Your natal nakshatra (where the Moon was when you were born) defines your deep psychology much better than your sun sign.
What are planetary dasas?
Dasas are the great planetary cycles that govern each stage of your life in Vedic astrology. Each planet rules a specific period (Saturn's Mahadasa lasts 19 years, Venus's 20, etc.) and marks the karma to be experienced in each decade. It is the most precise predictive system in all of astrology.
Can I know my past lives?
Yes. Vedic astrology analyzes karma brought from previous lives through the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu), the 12th house, and debilitated planets. It doesn't tell you names or eras, but it does reveal pending karmic patterns and the lessons you are meant to learn in this life.
Do I need my exact birth time?
For an authentic Vedic reading with dasas and bhavas (houses), YES, it is essential. The time determines your ascendant (lagna) and all predictive calculations. If you don't know it for sure, your premium reading includes astrological rectification to find it.
